Spring Into Action: Cleaning Your Pet's Supplies for a Fresh Start

Mar 12, 2025by Emily Tene

As spring arrives and the weather warms up, it’s the perfect time to refresh your pet's supplies and give them a good cleaning. After all, our furry friends deserve to start the season with a clean slate. Just like we do a spring cleaning of our homes, cleaning your pet's gear is an essential step in maintaining their health and comfort. Here are some tips to help you give your pet's supplies the fresh start they deserve!

1. Tidy Up Their Bedding

Pet beds, blankets, and pillows are the perfect spot for your pet to snuggle up, but they can also collect dirt, hair, and bacteria over time. Wash their bedding with a gentle, pet-safe detergent and dry it thoroughly. If the bedding is too worn out, consider replacing it with a fresh one to keep them comfortable and healthy. Don’t forget to wash any stuffed toys they love to curl up with!

2. Scrub Their Bowls

Your pet's food and water bowls are essential for their well-being. It's easy to overlook them, but bacteria can build up, especially with wet food or if your pet has a habit of dipping their paws in the water. Wash bowls regularly with hot soapy water or a pet-safe cleaner, and make sure they’re completely dry before refilling. Stainless steel or ceramic bowls are the best for durability and hygiene.

3. Clean Their Toys

Pets love to chew and play with their toys, but over time, dirt, bacteria, and grime can accumulate. For plastic and rubber toys, wash them in warm soapy water, then rinse thoroughly. You can also toss them in the dishwasher for a deeper clean. For plush toys, check the label for washing instructions or toss them in the laundry if safe. Be sure to inspect toys for any damage, as broken toys can be a choking hazard.

4. Sanitize Their Grooming Tools

Your pet’s grooming tools are essential to keeping their coat shiny and healthy. Whether it’s brushes, nail clippers, or combs, these tools come in direct contact with your pet’s skin. To clean them, soak brushes in warm soapy water to remove fur and dirt, and use an antibacterial wipe to sanitize clippers and combs. Make sure all tools are dried properly to avoid rust or damage.

5. Clean Their Crate and Carrier

If your pet uses a crate or carrier for travel or downtime, it’s important to keep it clean and fresh. Wipe down the interior with pet-safe disinfectant and wash any removable padding or mats. A clean carrier ensures your pet’s comfort and safety during trips and makes the environment less stressful for them.

6. Disinfect Their Litter Box

For our feline friends, the litter box needs regular cleaning, especially as we enter spring. Change the litter, scrub the box with a pet-safe cleaner, and make sure it’s thoroughly dry before refilling. This will prevent odors and keep your cat happy and healthy. Consider using natural, eco-friendly litter to reduce chemicals and ensure a fresh environment for your pet.

7. Check Their Collars and Leashes

Collars and leashes can collect dirt and germs, especially if they’re used regularly. If your pet’s collar is looking a little dingy, it’s time for a wash. Check for wear and tear, and replace any worn or frayed collars for your pet’s safety. Most leashes can be cleaned with warm water and soap, but make sure to let them dry completely before use.

8. Wash Their Clothes and Accessories

If your pet wears clothes, like sweaters or raincoats, spring is the perfect time to give them a wash. Many pet clothes are machine washable, but always check the care instructions before washing. Also, inspect accessories like bandanas or hats for any damage and consider replacing them if needed.

A Fresh Start for Your Pet

Spring cleaning doesn’t just apply to your home—your pet’s supplies need some love too! By taking the time to clean and sanitize your pet's gear, you’re not only keeping things fresh but also ensuring a safe and healthy environment for your furry friend to thrive. So, roll up your sleeves and get ready to spring into action—your pet will thank you!
